During my travels throughout East Texas talking about the dangers of using a cell phone and driving, one issue is true throughout. If young drivers see people in positions of authority such as their parents or law enforcement using a cell phone and driving, the signal is received loud and clear that if it is ok to engage in distracted driving.

I'm proud of the Obama administration for working through the Federal Transit Administration to help reduce Distracted Driving by creating policies that disallow transit employees from using a cell phone while driving a transit vehicle. The Federal Transit Administration has now partnered with the Florida Department of Transportation to help reduce distracted driving by educating transit drivers on the dangers of using a cell phone and driving.

A special thanks to FTA Administrator Peter Rogoff for his "Dear Colleague" letter asking employees of transit authorities to educate themselves on the dangers of distracted driving.

When young drivers see parents, teachers, law enforcement and people they respect driving without using a cell phone, they say it's ok to refrain from this dangerous activity even when the peer pressure remains high to engage in risky driving.
