It is truly amazing how many accidents there are daily involving 18 wheelers and passenger vehicles. Unfortunately, it is also amazing how many people die daily from these accidents. The emotional toll from a tractor trailer – passenger vehicle accident is significant. Not only do you have the injuries suffered by those in the accident but the emergency services personnel and law enforcement that risk their lives daily to help protect those that survive the crash but there are also witnesses who suffer trauma from seeing the collision.
Over the last 25 years I have been involved in hundreds of cases involving injury and death from 18 wheeler and passenger car accidents. Although no two are exactly alike there are many common elements. My experience is that most of the time someone makes an error of Judgment that proves fatal or certainly results in significant injuries. These Judgment errors are usually a combination of several inappropriate acts for the particular situation: Speeding, failure to render the right of way, and distracted driving are just a few that come to mind.
The reports of this wreck are that an 18 wheeler and the passenger vehicle struck each other on Highway 56 at Doug Bernard Highway. It is reported that there is one fatality. While initial reports indicate the 18 wheeler pulled in front of the vehicle, law enforcement are still on the scene gathering evidence to make a determination of fault. The impact was so forceful that the SUV is wedged under the 18 wheeler and first responders are having trouble removing the SUV from the under carriage of the 18 wheeler.
Trying to investigate a collision scene at night right after the afternoon rush hour traffic is very difficult for law enforcement. If you have any information on this collision and were not asked by law enforcement for your statement, please reach out to the Augusta GA police to provide the information you witnessed.
