I know Mom said to only say something if you have something nice to say but I just can't let this one go without saying something. I commend Illinois State Representative John D'Amico for sponsoring a bill banning cell phone use while driving in Illinois.
A story recently appeared indicating there is research challenging whether cell phone use is actually dangerous while driving. Please. The story goes on to state that cell phone users are safer drivers. We call all of this hog wash where I live.
You can't take a study by an economist and say that you are only going to study cell phone use after 9 pm because that's when you get free minutes so you would expect more crashes after 9 pm. Obviously the authors have not been in line at the grocery store lately. People may have to put items of food back on the shelves because they don't have any money to pay for groceries but they are still talking on that cell phone throughout the entire shopping spree.
There is no other side of the debate here. You either care enough about yourself, your family, friends and others to put down your phone and drive or you don't care and you put yourself at risk for seriously killing or injuring someone.
Study all you want to. If you take your eyes off the road to text or you concentrate on a phone call you can't drive safely and use the phone.
This study to me reminds me of the old adage that you can't walk and chew gum.
Best of luck to you Representative D'Amico. I hope you get this bill passed and through the Senate as well.
