Today Freshman through Seniors joined in a school wide assembly to discuss the dangers of Distracted Driving at Van High School in Van, Texas. My special thanks to Mrs. Kellam for helping to arrange the program. Over 700 students gathered in the gymnasium to participate in the presentation.
April is National Distracted Driving Awareness month so this discussion could not be more timely.
The presentation included watching short videos on the dangers of distracted driving as well as discussing statistics of the dangers of cell phone use and driving. I suggested the students show this video to their parents who also drive and use their cell phones. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SC3x7K3EOTk This is a public service announcement that was created in the United Kingdom. It is pretty graphic.
On discussing statistics, the Van student body is very representative of what I have seen throughout the last several years at other schools in East Texas. Probably 90% of the students have cell phones, more than half admit to using their cell phones while driving and about the same number if not more admit that their parents use a cell phone and drive. Should any of us be surprised to learn that the students do what their parents tell them not to do when they see the parents doing exactly what they say not to do?
Many of the students came up to thank me after the presentation. That was extremely kind. I was also impressed by how attentive and respectful 700+ students were during the presentation.
I'm pretty sure there are a few discussions around the dinner table in Van tonight concerning the dangers of Distracted Driving. I look forward to having the opportunity to make this presentation again in Van next year if I'm invited.
