Mayor Bill Kerlee, Star Harbor
Mayor Leland Pitts, Tool
Mayor Larry D. Estes, Trinidad
If you share in my concern that Distracted Driving is dangerous and life threatening, please contact these Mayors and let them know you too believe that a Proclamation of Distracted Driving Awareness month is needed to educate the public on the dangers of Distracted Driving which includes cell phone use and driving.
The proposed Proclamation reads as follows (example for Athens, Texas):
APRIL IS DISTRACTED DRIVER AWARENESS MONTH
Whereas, distracted driving can result in injuries and deaths to motorists, pedestrians, and bicyclists; and
Whereas, the health and well being of our citizens are a direct result of increased awareness about the dangers of distracted driving; and
Whereas, distracted driving occurs when drivers divert their attention away from the task of driving to focus on another activity instead; and
Whereas, 80% of all crashes and 65% of all near-crashes can be attributed to some form of driver distraction; and
Whereas, it is estimated that 1.6 million crashes per year can be attributed to cell phone talking and texting while driving; and
Whereas, distracted driving is a serious, life-threatening practice that is preventable; and
Whereas, in order to reduce the number of crashes as well as improve driver safety, motorists should dedicate themselves to adopting and maintaining safe behavior while behind the wheel.
Now, Therefore, I, RANDY DANIEL, do hereby recognize April 2012 as Distracted Driver Awareness Month in the City of Athens, Texas, and call on and encourage our citizens to increase their awareness of the dangers of distracted driving.
Adopted this ____ day of April, 2012.
Randy Daniel, Mayor
