Most of my posts on distracted driving including cell phone use while driving relate to my experiences talking with high school students and civic leaders. Very rarely do I know someone first hand that is killed in a car wreck. Most cases that come to our office are referred to us by past or current clients or people we have met over the last twenty five (25) years.

It really hits home when someone you know dies. At 51 I'm beginning to see my own friends getting sick and dying as well as the friends of my parents.

The death this weekend of Constable Guy Farley really hits home for a number of reasons. One, I knew Constable Farley. Two, I respect and admire law enforcement and all the wonderful things they do to allow us to live in a free Country. Three, Crandall is close. This isn't someone from Maine or California, this is someone that has been killed right down the road from me and my family.

The facts appear to show that Dallas County Precinct 4 Constable Guy Farley was hit by a driver this past Saturday night on FM 741 in Crandall. A driver crossed over the center line on this two lane highway and struck Guy's pickup. Constable Farley was off duty at the time of the collision.

Investigators are looking into alcohol on the part of the driver that ran into Farley as the cause of the collision. The at fault driver was taken to Parkland Hospital with his own serious injuries. Perhaps investigators will look into other reasons for the distracted driving including cell phone use if alcohol is not the culprit.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Constable Farley as well as a full recovery for the driver who struck Guy.

This story truly does hit close to home as I live in Crandall. Also, my nephew, Eric Branch, was killed by a drunk driver 3 years ago. Now my husband, Skip Nelson, was the only eyewitness to the accident that killed Officer Farley. He saw the wreckless driving of the suspect car and then witnessed a horrible tragedy. He tried to save Mr. Farley but could not. He will be forever haunted by this senseless act which took an innocent husband, father, son, and public servant. Our prayers are with his family.

Melissa, Thank you for the post. Please let your husband know how much we appreciate his efforts. I know the Branch family pretty well through working with Tammi at MADD. Another senseless tragedy. Tammi is truly a gift for those that need to hear about the dangers of drunk driving. Take care,
