Every year at this time we read of deaths of toddlers and children associated with falling into pools or lakes and drowning. I just read about a 3 year old that died in Laredo from an incident just like this. It appears that the child was with a foster family when the tragedy occurred.
I realize that we can't stop all tragedies from occurring. I'm not trying to place blame. I'm merely commenting on this incident so we can hopefully raised awareness to prevent this from happening to another child or family. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone involved in this child's life. I also want to thank all of the paramedics and medical personnel that attempted to save his life.
We have a pool in our backyard. I realize there is not a 100% way to prevent accidents and injuries. However, when there are toddlers and small children there are several things we can to do prevent injuries:
1. No swimming or play near the pool without supervision.
2. Make sure there is a fence around the pool. Today, you can buy very attractive temporary fences that will adequately protect children from getting into the pool area.
3. Keep the pool clean and free of debris so that you can always see the bottom of the pool including the deep end.
4. Don't overindulge on alcohol while children are in the home or near the pool. Their supervision is the number one thing that needs an adult's concentration and too much of a good thing inhibits the concentration required.
If you would like to discuss your pool safety concerns, please don't hesitate to call me.
