My children may never know the true dangers of riding a bicycle in the neighborhood. We live in a gated community off a farm to market road so they are kind of land locked realizing it is much too dangerous to ride their bikes on the farm to market road where people are driving 60+ miles per hour. However, all over the country today, kids are out riding their bikes all over town. Knowing that kids are out and about and that they may not pay as much attention as they should, I think we are all on high alert to be on the lookout. Especially in neighborhoods without sidewalks and neighborhoods where cars are parked on both sides of the street. I just read about a 14 year old teen from DeRidder, LA, that was involved in an accident with a car. While the investigation is still under review, the initial facts are that the bicyclist entered the roadway from a private driveway and was struck by the car. Instead of me trying to guess who might be at fault, I just want drivers to realize that we can't expect young teens to always be on the lookout. I think we have to drive defensively. The news reports indicate the teen was not wearing a helmet. That's one thing I can't understand. If you are riding a bike, you should be wearing a helmet. It's just that simple. If you don't have a helmet or can't afford one, please let me know and I will find someone in your neighborhood to get you one. There is absolutely no reason any child should ever ride a bicycle without their helmet. Getting back to my kids and their situation, they know it's a requirement punishable by the loss of phone privileges.
