This past week Kentucky Fried Chicken ("KFC") was ordered to pay 8.3 million dollars in an Australian Court to Monika Samaan for damages caused by contaminated food. Monica suffered salmonella encephalopathy at age 7. The family claimed that the injury was the result of eating a wrap that contained chicken and salad at a Sydney KFC.

An Australian Justice said that the chicken was contaminated as a result of KFC employees failing to follow proper preparation rules.

Think about how often you eat at a Fast Food restaurant and whether all safety and sanitary procedures are being followed. Every time I see the employees must wash their hands I start to get a little sick to my stomach that we actually have a law that requires we tell someone to wash their hands after they use the restroom. Really?

The contamination caused Monika to suffer a brain injury that was linked to the food poisoning. The monetary award was deemed needed to provide basic needs for Monika who suffers from severe brain impairment and spastic quadriplegia.

Restaurants have an obligation to make sure that the food they serve does not cause any injury or illness. That's the promise. In exchange for your money, we will serve you a product that will not harm you.

Several times a month we receive calls for help from potential clients that have suffered food poisoning. Many do not have any documentation. If you suffer from a food poisoning incident that you believe is related to a meal at a restaurant, please make sure you receive immediate medical attention. You should let the health care provider know that you recently ate something you believe made you sick as well as sharing exactly what you ate and the time you ingested the food. Without testing to determine whether you have suffered food poisoning, it is very difficult to establish any link between the meal and your illness or damages.

If you have been a victim of food poisoning at a fast food restaurant, please don't hesitate to call to discuss your options.
