Teen Killed in Car Accident Over the Weekend From Byron Nelson High School

Over two dozen counselors were available to help students this week cope with the loss of class mate Josh Hernandez who was killed in a single car collision this past weekend.

Just a couple of weeks ago I spoke at the Trophy Club Rotary Club on this very subject. While there has not yet been a disclosure of what caused the crash, my discussion on the dangers of distracted driving involves a discussion of the tentacles of danger that relate to a loss of a fellow student. The amount of grief and tragedy from the loss of a fellow student is enormous.

All that is known of the accident is that Josh Hernandez and his twin brother Jesse were on their way back from watching a girl's soccer game in Wichita Falls when they were involved in a one-car collision in Alvord, Texas.

I can think of many reasons for a one car wreck but unfortunately the one that comes to mind the most for me is driver inattention or driver error. While the cause of the accident may be the last thing on the minds of many, my belief is that we should discuss these issues before accidents happen so that students consider alternatives to any form of distracted driving. My thoughts and prayers are with this family. The true tragedy is the loss of a gook kid and the scars that will forever remain on the family and friends that will miss Josh.

If driver distraction was the cause of the collision perhaps Jesse will some day feel up to sharing the facts of the loss, if he knows, with others so that another family might be saved from dealing with this trauma.

Thank you to the counselors who are helping the students deal with this accident.

April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month. Now is the time to have a real heart to heart with your teenage drivers about the dangers associated with driving a car and using a cell phone or texting. Let's end senseless death and injuries related to vehicle accidents.
