Attentive Driving: Countermeasures for Distraction Forum

Comments Off

Technology is amazing. I'm sitting in an office in East Texas watching very smart people talk about the dangers of distracted driving at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) forum. As much as I would like to think I know about distracted driving, I enjoy hearing the views of these experts that have donated their time to participate in the forum. The information is incredible. I can't wait to share what I have learned today during the next presentation I give.

One thing that really stuck me today is how politics gets in the way of safety. A Senator from one of the states is on the panel. The question posed to him was how can we enact laws when the legislators themselves engage in the conduct and have constituents that spend many hours in their cars and also don't want a ban. Bottom line, I like my political position so people that want to talk on their phones are more important than the safety of others.

Another thing that really struck me today was that it's not only that people are not paying attention when they are sending emails and calling but receiving texts and calls as well. So it's not just sending emails and texts but receiving texts and calls. I have not spent much time thinking about where someone might be when I send them a text or call but I will after seeing this today.

A final note for the day is that the common theme from this morning is a discussion of data vs. laws. Is there enough data to make a decision on what should be lawful? Cell phone and smart phone technology is moving at a very rapid pace. The data is not moving at the same pace. Why? Among many reasons one that made perfect sense to me today- the DATA is with the dead bodies.

The dangers of Distracted Driving are simple and avoidable. We all have a much better chance of not being harmed or killed if we simply Pay Attention and Drive.
