I travel frequently and almost always take public transportation when I am in a foreign country, even when my family is with me. I refer to it as doing what the locals do.

Unfortunately this story brings back the sad reality that we are at risk on public transportation just as if we are in our own vehicles. The facts appear to be that a truck trailer broke off from the tractor striking the bus which caused the bus to veer off the roadway down a very steep ravine. Traveling on the bus were farm workers. 43 are confirmed dead and another 17 are still hospitalized.

The tractor trailer driver fled the scene.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to all of the victim's families for this horrible tragedy.

Just by reading the story I'm truly stumped what a bus driver could do to avoid this accident. None of the reports I have read indicate whether the bus driver survived the crash. I'm thankful for the various government agencies in the United States that control 18 wheeler safety. A trailer becoming detached from a tractor could only happen with either mechanical or human error. Regardless, I don't know what Mexican authorities or Mexican officials do to oversee safety of tractor trailer rigs. I have been concerned on this issue since we entered the NAFTA trade agreement. Allowing 18 wheelers from Mexico where the equipment may not be inspected like we inspect vehicles in the United States or allowing tractor trailer drivers into the US without any knowledge of their credentials definitely concerns me.

I hope the full investigation is released to the public so that we may all learn additional safety measures from this terrible accident.
