March is Brain Injury Awareness Month

Comments Off

Brain injuries, like many injuries, can be avoided by providing education that promotes awareness of simple things to do that can help avoid a traumatic brain injury. March is brain injury awareness month. New York State Health Department Commissioner Shah recently advised that there has been a significant increase (63%) in the number of brain injury incidents.

Brain injures can result from car crashes, slip and falls, sports activities, medical conditions and physical assaults. A traumatic brain injury may cause a decrease in cognitive abilities or decreased use of physical capabilities. Understandably, with a diminished use of physical or mental abilities, depression and emotional behavior changes may also occur.

Simple tips to follow to avoid a traumatic brain injury:

Always place your infant or child in a properly restrained child safety seat when driving.

Review the home of parents and geriatric relatives to make their living quarters free from trip hazards.

Use the appropriate safety equipment and proper fitting helmets for sporting activities.

Follow instructions for the proper use of heavy equipment.

Don't engage in dangerous activities without proper supervision.

If you have any concerns about a particular activity, ask questions to assure your safety.

Ask your friends to refrain from using a cell phone or texting while driving to avoid collisions.
