Tragedy Strikes Again With Kids and Cars

Comments Off

Everyday in this country tragedy strikes homes when family members accidentally harm other family members using their cars. Most cases involve backing up. Over 50 children a week are backed over by family members and friends. Of those 50 children, on average 2 a week die. I can't even begin to imagine the hurt within a family when this type of tragedy occurs.

Back overs are not the only injuries children sustain. Just this past Monday, tragedy struck a family in San Angelo, Texas. The father of an 18 month old child struck his son while pulling into the driveway. The father was driving a Dodge Durango. There are many studies dealing with the difficulty drivers have in seeing over the hood of their vehicles when it comes to seeing small children. For more information, please refer to www.kidsandcars.org.

Three other children were also out front playing when the accident happened. It is unclear whether the other children were all members of the family but we can only imagine how horrible this was for them as well.

I have posted about this issue before. I'm not looking to place blame. I know people will say someone should have been paying attention to the children, the children should not have been in the driveway, etc.

I only want to know what happened so we can discuss how to prevent this tragedy from happening to someone else. Was the father on a cell phone or distracted in some other way? Is the vehicle designed in such a way that visual clearance is not sufficient?

My thoughts and prayers are with this family. Perhaps we can all continue to discuss these issues so another family does not have to suffer through a loss like this.
