Distracted Driving – We have the Cure!

Comments Off

This morning I watched Clay and Shauna Sauer discuss the tragic loss of their daughter Taylor on the "Today" show. http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/26184891/vp/46626165#46626165

Taylor was using Facebook at the time that she collided into the rear of a tanker trunk in mid-January of this year.. Her parents went on the "Today" show to discuss the need for the State of Idaho to pass a Statewide Texting Ban.

For the past two years I have traveled throughout East Texas discussing the dangers of distracted driving with every high school or civic organization that would allow me to speak. I have spoken to over 12,500 students and my goal is to reach 15,000 students by the end of the year. My research from these presentations leads me to agree 100% with Mr. Sauer when he says these incidents occur because young drivers feel invincible or immortal. I also agree with Clay and Shauna Sauer when they say that we need to start education on the dangers of distracted driving at an early age. My 10 year old saw my presentation and she is very adamant that people should not text and drive or use their cell phones while driving. My 14 year old thinks she is ready to drive today but I'm not so sure the message resonates with her like it does my youngest child.

The Cure – Don't use your cell phone and drive. It's that simple. If you need to use your phone, pull over at a safe place and use the phone. Whether your trip takes 5 minutes or 10 minutes longer because you pulled over to use your phone may result in arriving alive. Drive Safe – X THA TXT.
