Congrats to the City of Chapel Hill – Cell Phone Ban will Save Lives!

Comments Off

It takes real guts as a city council person to enact an ordinance that many will find offensive, especially business people. When a local politician can take the politics out of a decision and vote safety of the community first, I have to say WOW, way to go.

This past week the City of Chapel Hill voted 5-4 to ban cellphone use while driving. The city council has been discussing this issue for several years but finally pulled the trigger this past Monday. The ban is a full ban that makes it illegal to use your phone – period.

Several business owners have expressed their displeasure with the ban. Their claim is that they cannot immediately respond to a customer call. How did we get to the point where the expectation is that if you don't immediately answer the phone, you will absolutely lose new business? Seems to me that maybe this is an opportunity for another APP that answers the call for you saying you can't answer right now because your cell phone is moving and that you promise to call back when it is safe to do so. I'm hiring that person. I like that they believe the safety of the community is more important than an immediate response for potential new business.

Really nice to see that the Chapel Hill City council found the dangers of distracted driving a public health issue that required real action. It is my hope that in a few years this will turn into an absolute domino affect where many cities follow the Chapel Hill cell phone ban lead.
