Against the Law to Text & Drive in Pennsylvania Starting March 8 2012

Comments Off

Starting this Thursday it will be an offense in Pennsylvania to Text and Use a Cell phone. If a police officer believes you are using your phone to text, you can be pulled over and issued a $50.00 fine. in my opinion, the fine is not high enough but it's a good start. The arguments against the law include invasion or privacy, we already have too many laws and the list goes on. The one argument that I think merits discussion here is that law enforcement may not be able to prove you were actually texting. I get the argument. However, one way to stop texting and driving is to make it costly and an inconvenience to do it. For example, if you speed, you may get a ticket and you may have to spend time fighting it. Perhaps after you receive three or four $50.00 citations for texting, you will consider it a hassle and stop.

I know my friends Jacy Good and Joel Feldman are very pleased to see this law enacted. They both lost family members from the unnecessary use of a cell phone while driving. Hopefully, this law will serve to provide education about the dangers of distracted driving so fewer people will text and drive.
